Wheels for Chevrolet Onix: 4x100 or 5x105? What's Different Between Old and New
Wheel Size, Bolt Pattern, and Pitfalls for the Onix — Brazil's Best-Selling Car Deserves an Honest Guide
Last Monday, Rafael came into the shop with a pearl white 2023 Onix Premier, wanting new wheels. He opened the catalog on the table, pointed to a beautiful set of 18-inch BRW wheels, and said: "This is it, I saw it on the Instagram of an Onix owner here in town."
I looked at the wheel, then pulled up the Instagram car he had saved — a 2018 Onix, not his new model. Different bolt pattern. The wheels that fit that Onix wouldn't fit his.
He saved $3,400 right then and there. Because in 2020, Chevrolet changed the Onix platform, and half of the Onix wheel listings on Mercado Livre are still offering the wrong bolt pattern for the new model. That's the problem this guide solves.

Onix 4x100 vs 5x105: The Divide Everyone Gets Wrong
The Onix went through a watershed moment in 2020. Before that, the platform was the old GM Gamma II — the same base as the old Prisma, Cobalt, Spin, Agile. 4x100 bolt pattern, 56.6mm hub bore, a legacy from the Celta. After 2020, GM launched the GEM platform and switched to 5x105.
This means that old Onix wheels do not fit the new Onix. Don't bother trying spacers or adapters — a different bolt pattern means there's no way around it. I've seen mechanics try welding, but I wouldn't recommend it by a long shot.
First Generation Onix (2012-2019): 4x100
- Versions: LS, LT, LTZ, Advantage, Effect, Activ
- Bolt Pattern: 4x100, 56.6mm hub bore
- Compatible Wheels: Celta, Corsa Classic, Prisma up to 2019, Spin (some lines), old Cobalt
- Original ET: 39-41, 5.5" width
New Generation Onix (2020+): 5x105
- Versions: LT, LTZ, Premier, Premier Turbo, Midnight
- Bolt Pattern: 5x105, 56.6mm hub bore
- Compatible Wheels: Cobalt 2016+, Spin 2018+, new Tracker, Trailblazer
- Original ET: 38-42, 6" or 6.5" width
The center hub bore is the same (56.6mm) on both generations — it's the bolt pattern that changes. This detail confuses many people because "it looks like the same wheel."
Ideal Wheel Size by Onix Version
The difference between a 2014 Onix Joy and a 2024 Onix Premier is huge — chassis, suspension, factory tires. A wheel size that looks amazing on one might be overkill on the other.
Onix LS / LT / Joy (first generation)
Sweet spot: 15-inch. 16-inch fits fine, and 17-inch with 205/40/17 tires works — but the LS's springs are too soft for 18-inch with a low profile. I've seen three clients bend wheels in less than 4 months trying 18-inch on this model. 15-inch with 185/60/15 tires is still the healthiest setup.
Cost: mid-range set $1,200 to $1,800 (15-inch), $1,800 to $2,600 (16-inch), $2,400 to $3,400 (17-inch).
Onix LTZ / Effect / Activ (first generation top-tier)
Sweet spot: 16-inch or 17-inch. More refined suspension, comes with better factory tires, handles 17-inch with 205/45/17 tires without issues. The Effect already comes with 16-inch from the factory. 18-inch is still the limit — it fits, but you need to be careful with potholes.
Onix LT / LTZ / Premier (new generation)
Sweet spot: 17-inch. The chassis is firmer, springs are better, 17-inch with 205/50/17 or 215/45/17 tires is the standard look for a tasteful mid-size car. 18-inch works very well on this new Onix — it handles it, looks good, and tires last. 19-inch starts to be overkill; the car's proportion doesn't support the look without lowering.
Onix Turbo / Premier Turbo
Sweet spot: 17-inch or 18-inch. These already come from the factory with 17-inch and decent 205/50/17 Continental tires. Upgrading to 18-inch with 215/45/18 or 225/40/18 tires looks excellent. The Turbo version supports it — the suspension is distinct from the entry-level versions.

Real Case: Davi's $4,000 Mistake
A client of mine, Davi, has a 2024 Onix LT (new generation, 5x105). Last month, he saw a set of white 18-inch wheels on sale on Facebook Marketplace — $2,100, beautiful. He bought them without checking the bolt pattern.
He arrived at the shop to have them mounted. I opened the box: 4x100 bolt pattern. Old Onix wheels.
The seller had advertised them as "4/5 lug wheels for Onix," not technically lying. But the set didn't fit. Davi lost $2,100 on the purchase, couldn't get a refund because the ad had a hidden paragraph saying "verify compatibility." He had to resell them for $1,400 to another old Onix owner, a net loss of $700.
Later, he bought a correct 5x105 set for $2,900. If he had researched beforehand, he would have saved $700 directly. Today, he himself teaches people in the local Onix WhatsApp group to check the bolt pattern before buying.
Three Costly Onix Mistakes
1. Buying without checking the exact year. A 2019 Onix is 4x100. A 2020 Onix is 5x105. One year difference, opposite bolt patterns. An ad that says "for Onix any year" is wrong.
2. Ignoring the 56.6mm hub bore. Aftermarket wheels often come with a generic 73.1mm hub bore. Without hub-centric rings ($15-20), the wheel won't center, will vibrate above 50 mph (80 km/h), and can loosen lug nuts.
3. Putting 18-inch wheels on the old Joy. The entry-level version's springs were not made for razor-thin tires. They bend within 3-4 months of normal use. 17-inch wheels with a robust tire solve the look without destroying them.
Before Buying, Simulate
The new Onix has different proportions than the old Onix — the car is slightly taller, the rear pillar is more angled, and the fender has a different design. Wheels that look good on a 2018 might look awkward on a 2024. Take a photo of your specific Onix, upload it to the simulator, and test 5 different wheels in 2 minutes.
To finalize your purchase, offers I see worth it in 2026: 5x105 wheels on Mercado Livre have decent curation filtered by wheel size, and partner stores on Shopee offer 12-month installments.
