Enkei Review: The Accessible Japanese Performance Wheel — RPF1, RS05RR, NT03, and PF01 in Detail
Enkei supplies Formula 1 wheels — and also makes aftermarket wheels you can buy. An in-depth look at their key product lines.
Ana drives a 2006 Mazda MX-5 NC for amateur track days — Interlagos, Velo Città, Cascavel. The original alloy wheels are heavy (10.5 kg). She wanted to reduce weight, improve feedback, and spend less than Volk TE37s (which cost R$ 16,000 per set in Brazil).
Importing 17-inch Enkei RPF1 wheels via Amazon USA costs around US$ 268 per wheel + consolidated sea freight (~US$ 300) + Brazilian taxes. Approximate total: R$ 8,500-9,500 per set delivered. Average weight advertised by Enkei: 8.1 kg per wheel for the 17-inch size.
A saving of 2.4 kg per wheel (x 4 = 9.6 kg for the set). On an MX-5 (which weighs 1,100 kg), this reduces the rotational inertia of the wheel assembly, affecting acceleration, braking, and corner entry. Ana measured her lap times at Interlagos — they dropped by 0.4 seconds per lap. For amateur track days, that's significant.
This is the classic use case for Enkei. I'll explain why the brand is special.
The Company — 74 Years in Aluminum Casting
Enkei was founded in 1950 in Shizuoka, Japan. It started by manufacturing cast parts for motorcycles. In the 70s, it entered the car alloy wheel market. 80s: OEM contracts with Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Mazda.
90s: Enkei began supplying wheels for Formula 1. McLaren, Williams, Ferrari (some years) used Enkei. In 2004, Enkei developed the "MAT Process" (Most Advanced Technology) — casting with extreme density, almost equivalent to forging.
Today, Enkei has 14 plants in 7 countries. OEM wheels in 70% of Japanese cars. The aftermarket division "Enkei Tuning" manufactures for the end consumer.

Launched in 2001. 6-spoke Y-design with aerodynamic function for brake cooling. Weight 8.1 kg for 17x9-inch. MAT Process.
It is the world's best-selling aftermarket wheel by volume. Almost every tuned Japanese car globally has featured an RPF1.

2026 Price: US$ 230-280/wheel. In Brazil with import: R$ 8,000-10,000 per set. Via local store (when available): R$ 9,500-12,000.
Enkei PF01 / PF05 / PF07
"Performance Forged" line (marketing name — it's MAT, not forged). Clean design, 5-7 spokes. Similar weight to RPF1.
Price: equivalent to RPF1. R$ 8,500-11,500 per imported set.
Enkei RS05RR (Modern Flagship)

Modern Performance Line. 6-spoke Y+ design. Lightweight.
R$ 14,000-18,000 per set.
MAT Process — What It Is
Most Advanced Technology is a casting process developed by Enkei. Unlike conventional casting, aluminum is pressed at high pressure inside the mold, producing a part with density similar to forged.
Result: 15-25% lighter than conventional cast wheels, 10-15% stronger. Still more affordable than pure forging. A good trade-off.
This is what differentiates the RPF1 from Mangels Lyric (design equivalent). RPF1 is 8 kg; Lyric is 10 kg. In a performance application, 2 kg per wheel matters significantly.
Strengths
1. Unbeatable weight-to-price ratio. To get an 8 kg 17-inch wheel for R$ 10,000, the RPF1 is the way to go. A 17-inch Volk TE37 is 7 kg but costs R$ 14,000. A BRW 750 is 10.5 kg for R$ 3,400 — half the price but 2.5 kg heavier. The RPF1 occupies the sweet spot.
2. Proven track record. Documented. Formula Drift, Time Attack, Gridlife — used in all. When you bring Enkei to a track day, you're carrying history.
3. Japanese engineering. Design engineered to ventilate brakes, accommodate large calipers, and withstand heat. Engineering details that random cast wheels lack.
4. Color variety. RPF1 comes in 8+ factory colors. You don't need to repaint.
5. Relatively accessible. Within the "premium imported wheel" universe, Enkei offers the most honest entry point.
Weaknesses
1. Weak distribution in Brazil. Direct import is almost always the way. Delays, bureaucracy, risk.
2. Forged line (RS05RR) is expensive. If you want forged Enkei, you'll pay BBS/Volk prices. You lose the price advantage.
3. Limited wheel sizes. RPF1 does not exist in 20-inch (maximum 18-inch). For large SUVs or trucks, you'll need to look for another line.
4. Specific bolt patterns. Most of the line is 4x100, 5x100, 5x114.3 (Japanese standards). If your car is European (5x112, 5x110), the RPF1 catalog won't have it.
5. Counterfeits exist. Aliexpress sells "Enkei RPF1" for US$ 180. Fake. Only order from a reliable source (Tire Rack, Amazon with reviews, official distributor).
Who Enkei Makes Sense For
Yes, it makes sense for:
- Honda Civic (all generations) — especially Si
- Honda Fit, Integra, RSX
- Subaru WRX, STi, Impreza
- Mazda MX-5, RX-8
- Toyota Supra MK4 / MK5, Corolla GLI, 86
- Nissan 350Z, 370Z, Silvia
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
For popular Brazilian cars (Gol, Onix), Enkei can look out of place. An RPF1 on a Gol is "too much" visually. Not wrong, but disproportionate.
How to Safely Import Enkei Wheels
Options:
- Tire Rack (USA): specialized website. International checkout. Real value + consolidated sea freight.
- Amazon USA: many Enkei options, verify official seller (not a disguised Aliexpress vendor).
- Independent importer: several stores in São Paulo offer consolidated import for customers.
- Official distributor: rare, but exists in São Paulo and Rio.
Always demand a JWL (Japanese Wheel League) certificate. Without it, it's fake.
Verdict
The Enkei RPF1 is the best wheel in the world for its weight-to-cost ratio. If you own a Japanese sports car and plan to take it to track days or want to reduce rotational weight, the RPF1 is the number one choice.
For pure urban use without track days, the weight difference between Enkei and Mangels (2 kg/wheel) doesn't justify the extra R$ 6,000. National brands like Mangels/BRW are sufficient.
The RS05RR is premium. It's only worth it if you're already at the Porsche / BMW M / serious track car level.
Before importing, simulate it on your car. A light silver RPF1 looks great on a white Mazda. On a blue Civic, it looks striking. Visualize to confirm your choice before spending R$ 10,000.
