Nissan Kicks Wheels: Why 18-inch is the Sweet Spot (and 19-inch is an Option)

By Equipe Wheel Studio

The Kicks has been one of Brazil's best-selling compact SUVs since 2016 — and also one of the most frequently customized when it comes to wheels. Kicks owners often want to personalize their vehicle because the SUV comes from the factory with a modest 17-inch wheel. The good news: the Kicks offers plenty of room for upgrades. The bad news: there are pitfalls related to bolt patterns and offset that can lead to wrong choices.

Kicks Technical Specifications

  • Bolt Pattern: 4x100 (first generation 2016-2022) / 5x114.3 (second generation 2023+)
  • Stock Wheel: 17-inch (6.5J offset +40)
  • Center Bore: 60.1mm (1st gen) / 66.1mm (2nd gen)
  • Brake Caliper: Normal, accepts 16-inch wheels and up
  • Max Tire Height without Rubbing: ~710mm (total diameter)

ATTENTION: The change in bolt pattern between generations is the most common mistake. Pre-2023 Kicks models are 4x100, post-2023 models are 5x114.3. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME WHEEL.

17-inch Wheels — Stock, Good for Road Trips

The stock wheel handles what the Kicks needs. 17-inch wheels provide comfort on the road, a reasonable tire profile to absorb bumps, and good fuel economy. If you drive a lot or use your Kicks in poor conditions (dirt roads, potholes), sticking with 17-inch wheels is a sensible choice.

17-inch Upgrade Options: BRW 1780 matte black (R$ 2.100), KR R33 (R$ 2.000), Mangels Cosmos (R$ 1.900). Visual change without sacrificing comfort.

18-inch Wheels — The Sweet Spot

18-inch is the ideal size for those who want to upgrade without compromising daily driving. It fits comfortably on the Kicks, with 225/50R18 tires fitting on 6.5-7.5J wheels with an offset of +40 to +45. The visual impact is significantly enhanced.

Recommendations:

  • BRW 1850 18-inch diamond-cut black — R$ 2.700 per set
  • KR R44 18-inch hyper black — R$ 2.800
  • Mangels Tornado 18-inch — R$ 2.500

Ideal Tire: 225/50R18 or 225/45R18. Maintains reasonable comfort, improves handling.

19-inch Wheels — Aggressive But Functional

19-inch wheels fit the Kicks. They really do. But you have to accept three compromises:

  1. Low tire profile (225/40R19 or 235/40R19) — comfort noticeably decreases
  2. Fuel consumption increase ~8%
  3. Deep potholes can bend the wheel (19-inch wheels are more sensitive)

The look is impressive. A Kicks with matte black 19-inch wheels looks like a different car. But it's a clear aesthetic vs. functional decision.

20-inch Wheels — Only If You Accept Total Comfort Loss

They fit. But it's overkill. A 225/35R20 tire profile becomes like a "bicycle tire" in terms of absorption. Fuel economy worsens by 10-12%. If you only drive in the city on good pavement and accept these trade-offs — go for it. But I don't recommend it for mixed use.

Offset: +40 to +45

The Kicks prefers an offset between +40 and +45. Less than +35 will make the wheel protrude past the fender (rubbing in turns, scraping speed bumps). More than +50 will tuck it in too much, making the car look small. The stock +40 offset is the safe bet.

Beware of the Generation Change (2023+)

The new Kicks (2023+) switched to a 5x114.3 bolt pattern and a 66.1mm hub bore. This means:

  • Old Kicks wheels DO NOT fit the new Kicks (and vice-versa)
  • New Corolla wheels (5x114.3) WILL NOW FIT the new Kicks
  • The selection of wheels for the new Kicks is greater — 5x114.3 is a common bolt pattern for Japanese SUVs

If you have a 2022 or older Kicks: look for 4x100. If you have a 2023+: look for 5x114.3. Do not mix them.

Recommendation by Profile

Mostly Highway Use: stock 17-inch or upgrade to KR R33 17-inch. Comfort maintained, slightly improved aesthetics.

Balanced Mixed Use: 18-inch BRW 1850 or KR R44. Best overall compromise.

Urban Use + Aesthetics: 19-inch with 235/40R19 tires. Accepts the trade-offs (fuel economy + comfort).

Show Car Only: 20-inch — only if you care about nothing but aesthetics.

20-inchR$ 4.000-5.000R$ 8.000-12.000

Common Kicks Wheel Mistakes

  • Buying Civic/Corolla wheels thinking they'll fit: NO. Civic is 5x114.3, older Kicks is 4x100. They are not interchangeable.
  • Ignoring the center bore: Kicks has a 60.1mm (older) or 66.1mm (newer) hub bore. A hub-centric ring is mandatory if the wheel's bore is larger.
  • 20-inch wheels for those living in cities with potholes: guaranteed problems within 12 months.
  • Buying 19-inch wheels with 245/35 tires to "fill the arch": ultra-wide tires increase the risk of rubbing against the fender in turns.

Conclusion

The Kicks is one of the most accommodating compact SUVs for wheel changes — accepting sizes from 17-inch to 20-inch. However, the best balance is achieved with 18-inch wheels. They strike a perfect equilibrium between aesthetics, comfort, fuel economy, and durability. 19-inch wheels are suitable for careful drivers who accept the trade-offs. 20-inch wheels are purely for aesthetics. And always check the generation before buying — 4x100 or 5x114.3, don't get that wrong.
